John Berger wrote in his 1972 book Ways of Seeing that there is an essential use for women in traditional oil painting and art history:
Women are depicted in a quite different way...because the 'ideal' spectator is always assumed to be male and the image of the woman is designed to flatter him. If you have any doubt that this is so, make the following experiment. Choose...an image of a traditional nude. Transform the woman into a man. Then notice the violence which that transformation does.
For this assignment you will be working on transforming an art historical piece or an old photograph. Locate a traditional image that contains a person in it and switch it with someone of the opposite sex. You can take pictures of yourself, friends or family to use as the replacement. You will make a intricate selection of your portrait and cut & paste it into the older image using the selection tools we went over in class. Be sure your replacement matches the original in tone, expression & posture.
Build this image as a composite. Take pictures of yourself or friends in the posture of the original image. You'll need multiple layers in your Photoshop file to construct this project.
Make your file 5x7" or larger at 200 ppi. Due: Thursday, March 17th.
On Thursday, 2/24, I will go over some basics techniques in Photoshop to get you started. You will need to have already started working on this or bring in all elements to start work on in it in class on Tuesday, 03/08! That means you've figured out what old image you want to use and taken all the necessary photos for it.
